Frequently Asked Questions

Have questions about osteopathy or what to expect during your visit? You’re in the right place. We’ve compiled answers to some of the most common queries to help you feel informed and confident in your care. If you don’t see your question here, please don’t hesitate to get in touch — we’re here to help.

Do I need a referral from my GP?

No. Some patients may be referred to us by their doctors however osteopaths are considered primary care practitioners, which means you can make an appointment directly without a referral.

How much does treatment cost?

Please call us on 02 4648 3883 to enquire how much your treatment will cost. We offer both Student and Pensioner discounts.

We offer HICAPS to claim direct from your health fund. We can also provide for DVA (Department of Veteran Affairs), EPC (Medicare) and Workcover.

Should I arrive early for my first appointment?
It is recommended you arrive a little early for your first appointment as we will need you to complete our New Patient Form. This form gives us some background information on your health and medical history and also provides your consent for us to treat you. Our patient forms can be now be done online via the link in your booking email before attending for treatment.
What do I need to bring?

If you have any previous X-rays, scans or test results it can be beneficial if you can bring these along to your appointment.

What happens during my first consultation?

Your osteopath will ask questions about your problem and symptoms and conduct a full osteopathic examination to best determine how to manage your condition.

As osteopathy takes a holistic approach to treatment, your practitioner may look at other parts of your body, as well as the area that is troubling you. For example, if you have a sore knee, your osteopath may also look at your ankle, pelvis and back.

Your osteopath may also provide education and advice to help you manage your condition between treatments. This may include giving you exercises to do at home or work.

Is osteopathic treatment painful?

Osteopathy is a form of manual therapy, so hands-on treatment may include massage, stretching, repetitive movements, mobilisation and/or dry needling.

If your injuries do require hands-on treatment of painful and tender areas, your osteopath will endeavour to make you as comfortable as possible.

It is not unusual to experience mild soreness for a day or two after treatment, similar to that felt after mild exercise. If this soreness persists or increases significantly, call us to discuss your concerns.

How long will my treatment take?

Each treatment will generally last between 30-40 minutes.

How many treatments will I need?

The number of treatments required will differ between patients and injuries. The goal is always to keep your appointments to a minimum. We would generally expect to see some changes in your symptoms after one or two treatments.

There are some long-term or chronic conditions that may require a more frequent or longer treatment plan. We also have a number of patients who book regular maintenance treatments as preventative measure.

What is the difference between acupuncture and trigger point dry needling?

While both dry needling and acupuncture involve the use of fine needles, they differ in their origins, philosophy, and application. At Ideal Osteopathy, we use trigger point dry needling as part of a modern, evidence-informed approach to release tight muscles, reduce pain, and improve movement. It targets specific trigger points based on anatomy and is often used for issues like muscular pain, headaches, and postural tension. Acupuncture, rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine, aims to balance the body’s energy (Qi) through meridian points throughout the body and is commonly used for a wide range of conditions including stress, digestive concerns, hormonal imbalances, and chronic pain. We respect and acknowledge acupuncture as a powerful healing tool, and while we focus on dry needling within osteopathic treatment, we recognise that both approaches can be very effective for many issues depending on your needs and preferences.

Is EPC (Enhanced Primary Care Plans) Gap Free?

We offer treatments under the Enhanced Primary Care Plans (EPC) however these treatments are not gap free. Some clinics do provide a gap free service however you may notice their treatment time is shortened in comparison to ours. Patients are required to pay for their treatment at the time of service and can then claim their rebate through Medicare – which is often a much better rebate than a lot of health funds.
